Caño island has a size of 741 acre and is located north-east of Corcovado National Park, is home too to the largest and best preserved coral reef in the country, also is a site of archaeological importance.

The island is surrounded by five platforms of coral reefs that house to small mollusks, crustaceans and an incredible endless fishes.
The island’s biggest attraction is underneath it, with walls ranging from 15 and 16 feet to 80 feet deep, this location is rated by divers as one of the best in the world, and is considered as a new and different place for the practice of diving.

Usually the conditions in the place are excellent, white fin sharks dominate the territory, but you can see other animals like turtles, eels, dolphins, stingrays and other shark.

It is home to species such as stingrays, barracudas, reef fish, open sea fish, huge shoals of jureles and snappers, parrot and coffer fishes, dolphins and even with luck you will see hammerhead sharks. Also depending on the time of year you can see humpback whales, killer whales and pilot whales.

Unique in its kind in the waters of Caño Island, you will be able to observe a great number of coral species, colorful fishes and the white-finned shark, as well as dolphins and whales depending on the season.


8 am - 9 am Transport

Departure from Sierpe to the Caño Island

Departure at 8:00 am from Sierpe, it is recommended to be 10 minutes earlier.

In the course, which lasts approximately 45 minutes through the Sierpe River, the crossing trough the mangrove (declared a RAMSAR site, as one of the most important habitats in the world), will allow appreciate birds, monkeys, crocodiles, Snakes, among many others of the great amount of the species that inhabit it.

Arriving at the mouth of the Sierpe River,  through the quiet waters of the Drake Bay, begins a 15-minute course until you reach Caño Island.


9 am – 10 am: Diving first dive

Upon arrival to the island will be the first dive immersion, in the waters considered one of the most important to carry out this activity of all Costa Rica and the world.
This immersion will last approximately 50 minutes, at one of the largest and best preserved reef in Costa Rica.
During the dives you can enjoy the company of dolphins that inhabit these waters, as well as the huge shoals of coral fish, stingrays, white-finned sharks and on season the majestic whales that visit the area every year.


10 am – 10:30 am: Snack and Rest

After the first immersion in the rich waters of the island, will be the time to enjoy a tropical fruit snack, and the ideal time to rehydrate and recover energies for the next dive.


10:30 am – 11:30 am: Diving second dive

In another point of the reef we will enjoy the second immersion which lasts approximately 55 minutes, here you can continue delighting yourself with the intense marine life that harbor these waters

Take advantage of the transparency of the waters to take pictures of marine life, or take a selfie next to a huge reef fish pond and brag about this memorable moment with your family and friends.


11:30 am – 12:30 pm: Lunch

After a morning immersed in the rich waters of the island, now will be the time to enjoy a rich picnic lunch on the white sand beaches of the place.


12:30 pm – 2:00 pm: Free time

During this time you can hike along the Caño Island footpaths, to visit the archaeological sites of the place and the pre-Columbian stone spheres, enjoy the white sand beach and crystal clear waters or simply relax.

2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Transport

Return from Caño Island to Sierpe

After having enjoyed one of the most beautiful and richest places in the South Pacific Coast, we are ready to return to Sierpe.
During the trip back to Sierpe, you can observe dolphins, whales, stingrays and sea turtles, depending on the season of each species.
